Det är en kortväxande vintergröna fern, med palmatkomplexa löv upp till 20 cm lång. Fernblad kallas också fronds. Bladen vinter bra, har pinnately dissected form. På deras nedre sida är sori, sporer för reproduktion av matt orange färg.

Sori occur on the sporophyte generation, the sporangia within producing haploid meiospores. As the sporangia mature, the indusium shrivels so that spore release is unimpeded. Steps Obtain a fern frond, and make sure there are sori underneath it. Pay attention to the color of the sori.

This fern is dark green and not particularly shiny. It is common and easy to identify by the wing which is several millimetres wide and extends all the way along the central wiry stem from the tip of the frond to the base (stipe) where it is attached.
