The statues were, however, not build in as one massive monolithic statue but was instead an assembly of smaller parts assembled around a large wooden framework. Parthenon Marbles, even fragmented and scattered, for otherwise we would have no way to imagine the style of Pheidias’ greater accomplishment – the Athena Parthenos. Not surprising for a statue of precious materials, it has disappeared without a trace.

The Parthenon and Athena Statue were very impressive. I would recommend visitors take an hour to check them out. The small historical exhibit and art museum are worth a look too. I do think the admission cost was a bit much for what you see, that is why I suggest that you only need to …

What happened to the Athena statue? The original Athena Parthenos created by Pheidias in the fifth century BC was stripped of its gold fixtures by Lachares in around 296 BC. What remained of the statue was almost certainly destroyed by a fire in the east naos of the Parthenon that must have taken place sometime shortly before around 165 BC.

The nickels and dimes slowly added up, and in 1982 construction at last began on Athena.
