The strikes of 1912 occurred near the administrative townlet of Bodaibo, on the Vitim River, to the northeast of Lake Baikal A short history of the brutal suppression of a strike by Russian gold miners protesting low wages and inhumane working conditions in 1912. Situated in the dense forest of south-east Siberia, the massive goldfields that lined the river Lena were, at the turn of the century, amongst the most profitable enterprises in the Russian Empire.
The Lena Goldfields Massacre of April 4, 1912, shook Russian society and rekindled the revolutionary and workers' movements after the post – 1905 repression. The shooting occurred during a strike at the gold fields on the upper branches of the Lena River to the northeast of Lake Baikal.
